Pomperaug High School Economics Students Win Big in Simulated Stock Market Game
Two Pomperaug High School Economics classes, led by PHS economics teacher Mrs. Kathleen Shannon, participated in the Connecticut Stock Market Game, and one of the investment teams came out on top. The Stock Market Game is offered each Fall and Spring by the Connecticut Council on Economic Education, and is an interactive, simulated game for students to learn about economics, finance, and the American economic system. Students are given $100,000 of simulated money and learn how to invest in the stock market. One of the PHS teams, composed of Seniors Alex C. and Corey T., and Freshman Cameron W. came in first place for High School Economics in the state. With their $100,000, they researched companies online, worked as a team to select, buy and sell profitable stocks, and then watched their investments on-line. “They made the appropriate adjustments and made wise buying and selling decisions,” said Mrs. Shannon. “In the end, they made $15,000 on their initial investment in six weeks.”
