POMPERAUG HIGH SCHOOL BAND MARCHES IN ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE IN NYC Marching Band Will Also Be Featured in Local Memorial Day ParadesMarch 24, 2004, Middlebury/Southbury—The Pomperaug High School marching band was one of scores of performers at the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City, the oldest and largest parade in the world with over 100,000 participants. Approximately 115 boys and girls from grades 9 –12 at Pomperaug High School marched and it was the third time that students from PHS participated in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. “The musicians practiced in the evenings, out in the cold, at the track and around the high school,” said Robert D’Angelo, director of bands at Pomperaug High School. “To prepare for the parade which was over three miles long, the students worked hard on their endurance.” Two drum majors were in charge of running the student-run rehearsals that include organizing the many lines of musicians. “High school senior Meghan Kimball and junior Christine McAulay have worked tirelessly to bring the marching band to parade-quality,” said Mr. D’Angelo. “They both deserve tremendous credit for their work.” To qualify to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the students submitted a sample of their performance on compact disk and a photograph of the band. Once approved to be one of the many marching bands at the parade, the students had to memorize the selection of songs. This year, the students honored the armed forces with a patriotic medley including “Grand Old Flag”. “This is my first year as a drum major and I’ve learned a lot from Meghan (Kimball),” said Christine McAulay. “We weren’t nervous at all because we knew what to expect. All the kids were pretty prepared for the parade and were excited about it.” Townspeople
