District Instrument Recruitment Night for Grade 4 Students/Parents

The Region 15 Band and Orchestra Teachers invite fourth graders and parents to a Districtwide Instrument Recruitment Night. The program will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at the Pomperaug High School Auditorium.

This is the best opportunity to register for the 5^th Grade Band or Orchestra program; there will not be a recruitment night in the fall.

Music teachers will share information with students and parents about joining Band or Orchestra and members of the Pomperaug High School Tri-M, the international music honor society, will showcase their instruments in a hands-on way.

The teachers will provide parents with a list of instrument vendors so they may contact the vendors directly to discuss rentals, payment plans, and other issues.

Schedule of Events:

Brief introduction to the 5^th grade Instrumental program by the Band and Orchestra teachers (in PHS Auditorium)
Presentations and performances by PHS Tri-M Honor Society musicians
Visiting Instrument booths: Parents can direct specific questions to teachers. At each instrument booth your child will be able to play each instrument and speak with high school music students. Parents will be given a list of local instrument rental companies.
Sign up by instrument for either band or orchestra with the band and orchestra teachers

Before exiting the event, families are strongly encouraged to sign up for either Band or Orchestra, therefore students and parents are advised to visit all booths before registering for their instrument of choice.

“Participating in the 5^th Grade Band or Orchestra gives students the opportunity to learn musical skills that will benefit them for a lifetime, including self-discipline, creativity, and teamwork,” said Miss Elizabeth Del Vecchio, fifth grade band teacher.

PHS Graduation, Middle School Commencement, & Last Day of School

The graduation and commencement schedule is:

Monday, June 18 - RMS (5:00 p.m.)
Tuesday, June 19 – MMS (6:15 p.m.) -- Updated time!
Wednesday, June 20 – PHS (6:30 p.m.)

All graduation and commencement ceremonies are held at the Pomperaug High School gym.

Last day of classes is June 20th for students.

2013 Teacher of the Year Award - Due Friday!

We invite all Region 15 staff, parents and students to submit nominations for the 2013 District Teacher of the Year. Nomination forms are now available by clicking here, and also in the main office of each school and must be returned no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2012.

The nomination forms should be completed with a written narrative which discusses evidence in support of the candidate. The Selection Committee has developed the following guidelines for considering nominations for Teacher of the Year:

Demonstrated ability to inspire enthusiasm and motivation for learning in students.
Demonstrated use of effective teaching techniques, flexibility of style, innovation, and creativity.
Caring relationships with students.
Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional growth and development.
Respect and admiration of students, colleagues, parents and administration.
Personal philosophy and goals.
Ability to articulate ideas clearly.
Community involvement.

These guidelines will represent general areas for consideration; it is not necessary for the candidate to possess special strengths in every area, since the selection will be based on a holistic assessment of the candidacy. In addition, The Region 15 Teacher of the Year nominees must be tenured teachers in our district and have not received this award previously. The Teacher of the Year award is a wonderful way of recognizing excellence for all teachers through the selection of an outstanding representative teacher in our district. Please take a few minutes to nominate one or more teachers for this award.
