Digital Academy to attend CT Student Innovations Expo, May 19

Students in the Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences will participate in the Connecticut Student Innovations Expo held this Saturday May 19th, 2012, at the XL Center in Hartford, CT (directions/parking). Doors open to the public at 9:00 a.m. Booth exhibitions will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. for the general public.

The Expo showcases year-long student projects and achievement through the convergence of art, creativity, science, engineering and business. Middle and high school students from around Connecticut and Massachusetts display innovative excellence as they compete against other schools for best project designs. Join us in supporting our talented and innovative Pomperaug students as they showcase their projects.

Statement from members of the Academy:

On May 19th our class will be going to the Student Innovation Expo in Hartford to present a product that we have been working on the entire year. It is a contest on which we will be judged. We have many different kinds of jobs for each person in our class. For example we have video editors, cameramen, Oral presenters, Website designers, social media specialists, experts in IVS 2, and many different kinds of researchers. The theme of the Expo this year is to identify and research a local issue. Our problem is a plant called the Japanese Barberry--an invasive plant that causes many problems like an increase in mouse and deer populations.

The Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences is a sequence of required courses and electives within an existing high school course of study. The Academy develops a participating student's artistic and creative skills in the use of digital media with a focus on applying those skills to science and technology. In their senior year, students must take the Capstone Experience, which culminates with a research-based project.

PHS Graduation, Middle School Commencement, & Last Day of School

The graduation and commencement schedule is:

Monday, June 18 - RMS (5:00 p.m.)
Tuesday, June 19 – MMS (6:15 p.m.) -- Updated time!
Wednesday, June 20 – PHS (6:30 p.m.)

All graduation and commencement ceremonies are held at the Pomperaug High School gym.

Last day of classes is June 20th for students.

2013 Teacher of the Year Award - Due Friday!

We invite all Region 15 staff, parents and students to submit nominations for the 2013 District Teacher of the Year. Nomination forms are now available by clicking here, and also in the main office of each school and must be returned no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2012.

The nomination forms should be completed with a written narrative which discusses evidence in support of the candidate. The Selection Committee has developed the following guidelines for considering nominations for Teacher of the Year:

Demonstrated ability to inspire enthusiasm and motivation for learning in students.
Demonstrated use of effective teaching techniques, flexibility of style, innovation, and creativity.
Caring relationships with students.
Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional growth and development.
Respect and admiration of students, colleagues, parents and administration.
Personal philosophy and goals.
Ability to articulate ideas clearly.
Community involvement.

These guidelines will represent general areas for consideration; it is not necessary for the candidate to possess special strengths in every area, since the selection will be based on a holistic assessment of the candidacy. In addition, The Region 15 Teacher of the Year nominees must be tenured teachers in our district and have not received this award previously. The Teacher of the Year award is a wonderful way of recognizing excellence for all teachers through the selection of an outstanding representative teacher in our district. Please take a few minutes to nominate one or more teachers for this award.
