Pomperaug Regional School District 15

Computers Philosophy

We live in an age of tremendous change brought about by new technologies. Almost every aspect of our lives has been dramatically affected by the age of the microprocessor. The ways that we work, play, and communicate have been altered by technologies barely conceived of forty years ago. The world our children will enter when they graduate from Region 15 schools will be different, even from the one in which they now function. Technology continues to shrink our world. One can now collaborate globally on a project almost as easily as with someone down the hallway.

Our children, to be successful, will need to be prepared for this Information Age. They must be prepared for jobs that do not even exist at this time. They need to become adaptable, flexible, critical thinkers. And most of all, they need to be information literate. The computer/technology program in Region 15 is based upon the National Educational Technology Standards, which have also been adopted by the State Department of Education in Connecticut. Our program is designed to prepare students for a world that is constantly changing as technology becomes more prevalent, faster, and easier to use.

The computer/technology program is designed with the following beliefs in mind:

  • The technology program provides tools that enhance all aspects of teaching and learning but it is not, in and of itself, a separate subject.
  • Technology must be imbedded into every subject.
  • The computer/technology program must be flexible and dynamic to take advantages of constant change in the field.
  • New technologies raise new ethical questions. An integral part of any technology program must be the development of responsible use of technology.
  • Technology changes the very nature of literacy. Information is available in a variety of formats and students must be competent in accessing and using all information.
  • Technology opens the classroom to the global community.
  • Technology offers tools to individualize instruction, meeting the creative and critical thinking needs of all students.
