Course Offerings (Gr 9-12)
Proprietorship Accounting (1/2 year, 1/2 credit) Grades 9-12
The course presents the introductory phase of accounting for those students interested in business after high school or in college. The accounting cycle as it applies to personal use and a proprietorship service business is stressed.
Partnership Accounting (1/2 year, 1/2 credit) Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Proprietorship Accounting
The course builds upon the introductory course of proprietorship accounting. Students learn how to keep the financial records of a merchandising business that has 2 or more partners. The use of special journal, handling payroll, taxes and completing the end of the fiscal period adjustments and procedures will be presented.
Corporate Accounting (1/2 year, 1/2 credit) Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Partnership Accounting or Honors level math, and permission of the instructor.
This course is a continuation of partnership accounting for students planning a career in the accounting field or in business. Managing the financial records for a corporation will be stressed. Students will learn how to handle uncollctible accounts, depreciation, notes, inventory, accruals, taxes, and voucher systems for a corporation.
Advanced Corporate Accounting (1/2 year, 1/2 credit) Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Corporate Accounting
This course is a continuation into special applications of accounting at the corporate level. Managerial accounting, cost accounting, not-for-profit organizations, cash flow, forecasting, taxes, and decision making are areas to be covered as well as software applications including the use of spreadsheets.
Business and Consumer Law (1/2 year, 1/2 credit) Grades 10-12
This course teaches students how the law applies to their every day lives and to their human experiences -- situations in which people relate to one another as consumers and in the business world. Topics include criminal and tort law, our court system, jury duty, contracts, agencies, personal and business legal agreements.
School to Career (1 year, 1/4 credit) All Freshmen will be scheduled for this
This course offers grade 9 students an introduction to computer literacy and career exploration using available technology and resources.
Cooperative Work Education CWE (1-3 credits over 2 years)
Prerequisites: Junior or Senior Status. Students are selected by the CWE coordinator based upon need and personal benefit to the student. Teacher and guidance recommendations are also considered.
CWE is a student-centered pre-apprenticeship providing for a school to work transition. The program includes both academic and work oriented instruction in the classroom and on the job. The community services as a laboratory where carefully planned practical experiences can be applied concurrently with the classroom learning.
Tech Prep Program
Naugatuck Valley Community College in cooperation with PHS has developed an articulation that makes it possible to grant college credit for high school mastery in selected business and technology courses, including accounting, computer design I and II.
NVCC
This program is offered in conjunction with Naugatuck Valley Community College. Students are given both high school and college credit for successful completion of course work done through this program.
