Behavior and Expectations
REMOVAL FROM CLASS
A. Each teacher shall have the authority to remove a student from class when such student deliberately causes a serious disruption of the educational process within the classroom, provided that no student shall be removed from class more than six times in any year, nor more than twice in one week unless such student is referred to the building principal or his/her designee, and granted an informal hearing as set forth in Section IV C of this policy.
B. Whenever any teacher removes a student from the classroom, such teacher shall send the student to a designated area and shall immediately inform the building principal or his/her designee as to the name of the student against whom wuch disciplinary action was taken and the reason therefore.
C. The parents or guardian of any minor student removed from class shall be given notice of such disciplinary action within 24 hours of the time of the institution of such removal from class.
BULLYING
Bullying behavior by any student in the Region 15 schools is strictly prohibited, and such conduct may result in disciplinary action, including suspension and/or expulsion from school. "Bullying" means any overt acts by a student or a group of students directed against another student with the intent to ridicule, humiliate, or intimidate the other student while on school grounds or at a school sponsored activity, which acts are repeated against the same student over time. Students and parents may file formal or informal complaints concerning suspected bullying behavior, and students shall be permitted to anonymously report acts of bullying to teachers and school administrators. Any report of suspected bullying behavior will be promptly reviewed. If acts of bullying are verified, prompt disciplinary action may be taken against the perpetrator, consistent with his/her rights of due process. Board policy and regulation 5131.2 sets forth this prohibition and the related procedures in detail, and are available to students and their parents/guardians.
SUSPENSION AND EXPULSION
- Conduct which endangers persons or property or is seriously disruptive of the educational process shall be considered cause for a suspension or expulsion. Included within such prohibited conduct are the following:
- Conduct causing a threat of injury to the student or others;
- Use of physical force against another person;
- Theft of personal or school property, or taking or attempting to take personal property or money from another person, or from his/her presence, by means of force or feat;
- Willfully causing, or attempting to cause, damage to school property;
- Possession and/or use of a cellular phone, radio, walkman, CD player, personal data assistance, walkie talkie, or similar electronic device is in violation of Board policy, regulations, or school rules;
- Participation in an unauthorized occupancy of any part of any school or school premises or other building owned by any school district, and failure to leave such school premises or other facility promptly after having been directed to do so by the principal or other person then in charge of such building or facility;
- Intentional incitement which results in an unauthorized occupation of any part of a school or other facility owned by any school district;
- Possession, use, transmission, or being under the influence of any narcotic drug, hallucinogenic drug, amphetamine, barbituate, marijuana, alcoholic beverage, or intoxicant of any kind;
- Possession or transmission of a facsimile of any narcotic drug, hallucinogenic drug, amphetamine, barbituate, or marijuana;
- Knowingly being in the presence of those who are in possession of, using, transmitting, or being under the influence of any narcotic drug, hallucinogenic drug, amphetamine, barbituate, marijuana, alcoholic beverage, or intoxicant of any kind;
- Possession or transmission of any firearm,knife, explosive, deadly weapon, martial arts weapon, or other dangerous instrument or facsimile thereof;
- Using or copying the academic work of another and presenting it as his/her own without proper attribution;
- Possessing or consuming tobacco products;
- Open defiance of the authority of any teacher or person having authority over the student, including verbal abuse;
- Intentional and successful incitement of truancy of other students;
- Violation of any federal or state law which would indicate that the violator presents a danger to any person in the school community or to school property, and;
- Violation of any other Board policy or rule dealing with student conduct, including those dealing with conduct on school buses.
SANCTIONS
When a student is sent to the principal, a variety of sanctions may be utilized, depending upon the seriousness of the problem, the age of the student, and past behavior. Sanctions may include (but are not limited to) one or more of the following:
- Verbal warning
- Removal from a situation
- Letter or phone call to parents
- Loss of recess time
- Restitution of stolen or destroyed material
- After school and/or before school detention
- Loss of some privilege (i.e., field trip)
- In-school suspension
- Out of school suspension
Due to the potential risk of eye damage, laser pointers are strictly forbidden in school.

The principal will use the blue discipline referral form to communicate with parents regarding behavior infractions. She will call parents of children in kindergarten or when a detention or suspension must be scheduled.
