Drop Off & Pick Up Procedures
Morning Drop Off
Please follow the below procedures to make morning drop off quick, efficient and most importantly, safe:
• Drive up along the side of the building near the general parking area.
• You may let your child off near the cement walk that leads to the front door. That drop-off area and walkway are safe for your children.
• Students should exit from the right/passenger side of the vehicle.
• If you feel you need to get out of the car to assist your child/children, we ask that you park in the side parking lot and walk your child/children to the walkway.
• Turn around in the side parking lot and drive straight out, obeying the stop sign as you leave.
• Do not pass cars as you never know when a door might open and a child might exit a vehicle.
• Do not drive up in the circle where buses pull up, either in the morning before school, or at dismissal time.
• Do not use the parking lot in front of the school to pick up or let you child out of the car.
With patience, courtesy and by following the procedures, students can be dropped off safely and parents can move efficiently through the line. Allow yourself time so as not to have to rush; your patience and cooperation are
greatly appreciated.
Students should not arrive at school before 8:40 a.m. Classes begin promptly at 9:00 and it is essential that all students be on time every day. Students arriving after 9:00 must report to the Nurse’s Office before proceeding to class.
Afternoon Pick-up
Pomperaug Elementary School is a very large school and the office is very busy, especially at the end of the school day. If your child is to be picked up at the end of the day, the following procedures must be followed to help avoid confusion and miscommunication:
• It is essential that you send a note to the school if you are going to pick up your child at 3:40, or if your child is going home with someone other than a parent, or if your child is going to a special activity such as Brownies, religious classes, etc.
• If you forget to write a note, call the office BEFORE 3:00 to inform the staff that you will be picking up your child.
• Parents picking up children early must go to the office no later than 3:25 p.m. to sign their child out. Under no circumstances should you walk directly to the classroom to get your child.
• Unscheduled pickups, without a prior note, that occur after 3:25 p.m. will be dismissed through the cafeteria at 3:40 p.m. Parents must report to the office to receive a pick-up pass to present to the staff on duty in the cafeteria. Parents should wait for their children inside the cafeteria, NOT in the hallway. The person on duty will release your child to you. The following outlines the procedure:
• Children will not be allowed to run to their parents upon entering the cafeteria.
• Parents are to line up in the appropriate grade level line. If you are picking up more than one child in different grades, line up in the youngest child’s grade level line.
• When you are first in line the staff on duty will release your child to you, and signal your older one as well.
• You then proceed to the back door, and at that point the child will hand the aide on duty the orange dismissal slip.
PES is a large school and the office is often very busy. Last-minute calls at the end of the day have caused confusion and miscommunication, resulting in a child or parent being upset, and we do not want that to happen. It is essential that parents send a note in with their child in the morning whenever he or she is to be picked up.
Please do not wait outside the school at dismissal time. The aides and teachers have been asked not to release a child to any adult who may be waiting at the buses. Do not try to take your child from the bus line. Come to the office for assistance.
