Greetings!
Although most people would agree that there were very few positives resulting from the devastating storm of Oct. 29th, one nugget of gold stood out for me. It occurred on our third day and night of no light, heat, or water, when friends of ours in another town insisted that we spend the night at their home. What a joy it was to be able to experience those three things we take so much for granted (light, heat and water), not to mention the luxury and gratefulness we felt at finally being able to take a shower!
But above and beyond the renewed appreciation for all of our creature comforts was the pleasure of re-connecting with friends and family on a face-to-face basis. During that week, we talked with each other more, played cards, read, listened together to an old-time transistor radio, and remembered what it used to be like before technology existed and electronics provided the main form of communication between us.
While I hope we never have to experience a power outage of such magnitude again, I do plan on frequently incorporating more time for spontaneous get-togethers with friends and family where we make no prior plans and have no outlined agenda. Times when we simply say, “Come on over, I insist,” and there’s no cooking or preparation beforehand, we turn off the TVs, computers, videos and iPhones, and just spend quality time being together.
Now doesn’t that sound like a great December holiday plan?
Best regards,
Deborah Schultz
