POMPERAUG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WALL OF PEACE

Children have been bombarded with media coverage of war and tsunamis, terror alerts, shootings, and much more. To combat these negative images, the students at Pomperaug Elementary School have been discussing PEACE, what it means to them, and how they can promote it.

The students have been studying artists whose works embrace peace, and they have also been creating paintings and drawings of what makes them feel peaceful.

“We needed to find a tangible project for the children so they could creatively express their feelings about peace and what peace means to them,” said Nancy Neal, Pomperaug Elementary School art teacher. “The students are painting ceramic tiles with whatever design or feelings they wish in order to build the PES Wall of Peace.”

Every student, staff member and teacher from Pomperaug Elementary School is designing and painting a tile, which will then be permanently affixed on the wall adjacent to the art room.

The wall of peace will have 680 tiles when it is complete by late spring 2005.

“I’m grateful to the Mitchell family in Southbury who encouraged us to apply for the project’s grant from the Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation and the Southbury Community Trust Fund,” said Mrs. Neal. “The children are excited to create something that the whole community could visit and appreciate. This wall of peace will be a lasting testament to the caring nature of our students and the PES family for years into the future.”
