GES Women in History  (March 11, 2008)

As part of the Gainfield Elementary School's Women In History Celebration, eleven parents assumed the persona of famous women in American history to tell students about their achievements. Some of the special visitors included aviatrix Amelia Earhart, author and abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe, country singer Patsy Cline, Red Cross organizer Clara Barton, and Girl Scouts founder Juliette Low. NASA space pioneer Dr. Sally Ride, played by Karen Reilly, was one of the many Gainfield mothers and grandmothers who gave seven-minute presentations, 18 times over the course of the day. "These Women in History presentations involve the community and provide authentic learning opportunities and historical information for our children," said Dr. Len Tomasello, principal of Gainfield Elementary School. "The volunteers made this a truly special event for the students." Parent-volunteer Stefanie O'Connor helped coordinate the event.
