Board of Education Student Reps Announced
Jessica Clark

Region 15 Schools is pleased to announce that Alex Ramnarine and Hana Hussain have been appointed as student representatives to the Region 15 Board of Education (BOE). As non-voting members of the BOE, the students serve as liaisons between the student body and the BOE. Both seniors at Pomperaug High School (PHS), they share with the community updates on academics, extra-curricular activities, school spirit and school engagement.

“We are excited to welcome Alex and Hana to participate on our Board of Education.  We highly value the perspectives, insights and suggestions of our students and hope their participation encourages student involvement and promotes communication,” said Marion Manzo, Chairperson of the Region 15 Board of Education.

Alex is the current Treasurer and member of the PHS debate team, member of Model United Nations, holds a position on the executive board of the National English Honors Society at PHS, served as an intern at the Middlebury Town Hall during the Summer, 2021, and is currently conducting research about prosecutors in Connecticut for his AP Capstone class. His future plans include studying sociology, public policy and/or neuroscience.  "Our generation faces a multitude of challenges. Regardless of how so, it is our obligation to make our voices heard and take an active role," said Alex.

Hana is the current tournament secretary of the PHS debate team, and founder and coach of the Memorial Middle School Debate Team, serves as the Activities Coordinator of the Science National Honor Society, member of Model United Nations, manager of the Pomperaug Theatre Company, and active member of the Pomperaug High School chorus. She volunteers weekly at the Southbury Food Bank and was elected Secretary of State in the American Legion Auxiliary's CT Girls State. Her future plans include studying mechanical engineering or pre-law. “Ever since I took my AP US Government class sophomore year I have been fascinated by America’s democratic system. I love how the founders designed many of our institutions to be "by the people, for the people", and so I had a strong affinity to be a student representative on a board that primarily serves students. I'm looking forward to voicing student opinions at the forthcoming meetings and working with Alex to create positive change in our community."
