On April 30, 2025, PHS students joined over 1,000 peers from across Connecticut at the annual Construction Career Day, hosted by the Associated Builders and Contractors of Connecticut (ABC CT) at New Life Church in Wallingford. This immersive event offered students a hands-on introduction to the world of skilled trades.
Hands-On Learning Experiences

Activities included operating heavy machinery like excavators and cranes, climbing utility poles, and handling tools used by carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians. These practical experiences provided valuable insights into the daily responsibilities and skills required in the construction industry.

The event emphasized that rewarding careers in construction are accessible without a traditional four-year college degree. ABC CT President Chris Fryxell highlighted the industry’s need for skilled workers, stating, “These are great careers, and we actually have a critical shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry right now.”
"Events like this open students' eyes to the incredible range of opportunities available in the skilled trades," said Jeromy Nelson, Director of Fine, Applied and Technical Arts in Region 15. "
