Region 15 Schools

On Thursday, March 14th (Pi Day), 3 teams of students from Pomperaug High School (PHS) competed in a regional mathematics competition as part of the national Mathematical Puzzle Program.  Held at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, 35 teams from approximately 20 area school districts participated in an engaging event where students solve math problems in a “scavenger hunt - escape room” format.

Only six of the 35 teams successfully completed the puzzle and three of them were from PHS. In addition, PHS students L-R, Griffin Nemoto, Avinnaash Thillaikumaran, Sohan Nelakudity, Jason Hu, James Kelly, Owen Broadwater were part of the team that completed the puzzle in the fastest time.

The program begins with teams solving three-location puzzles by using an app on their phone. The solution gives them a numerical answer which sends them out to a location on the SCSU campus. Once they get to that location, students scan the answer which has them complete another puzzle.

“Students utilize problem-solving and communication to solve non-traditional math problems on this trip. Students who attend are always surprised, yet excited, about how much "fun" they had doing a day of math. They continue to look forward to attending future events!” shared Stephanie Hunter, PHS math teacher and advisor for the PHS Math National Honors Society (Mu Alpha Theta) who accompanied the students at the competition and organized the field trip.

The mission of Mathematical Puzzle Programs (MaPP) is to organize quality events that get students moving around, engaged in problems, and having fun by learning and using mathematics to solve a series of puzzles.
