Since joining the district in November 2001, Ms. Deuth has been a steadfast presence at Rochambeau Middle School (RMS), where she began her career and continues to make a profound impact every day. In August 2022, she earned her Registered Behavior Technician Certification, further strengthening her expertise and commitment to student support. Her leadership, strong sense of responsibility, and professionalism set a powerful example for paraprofessionals throughout the building.

With more than two decades of service to Region 15, Ms. Deuth is a vital part of the RMS family and the broader district community. Her deep experience and intuitive understanding of middle school learners—especially those with diverse learning needs—are evident in her ability to create inclusive, supportive environments where every student can thrive.

Ms. Deuth goes above and beyond daily—not only for her students but for her colleagues. She is known for stepping in to assist, collaborating seamlessly with staff, and offering consistent support with humility and grace. Trusted by students and educators alike, she builds strong, respectful relationships across grade levels and brings a calm, steady presence to every interaction.

“Ms. Deuth has shown an unwavering commitment to students' success. She goes the extra mile each day to create a safe, nurturing space where every child feels supported and valued,” said Michael J. Bernardi, Principal of Rochambeau Middle School. “She works collaboratively with our teachers and staff, bringing innovative ideas, patience, and empathy to the classroom. Whether providing one-on-one support or working with small groups, Ms. Deuth is a consummate professional who works tirelessly to ensure that all students feel included, valued, and appreciated. We are so fortunate to have her as part of our team.”

“Region 15 is proud to honor Mercedes Deuth for her outstanding service, her dedication to excellence, and the remarkable impact she continues to make each and every day,” added Joshua Smith, Superintendent of Schools.

This recognition is part of the Connecticut State Department of Education’s (CSDE) Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year award program. Each year, the CSDE honors paraeducators selected by their school districts for their exceptional service, accomplishments, and contributions to students, schools, and communities. From among these honorees, one individual is chosen to receive the statewide Anne Marie Murphy Award and serve as a spokesperson for paraeducators across Connecticut.

In March 2013, the CSDE and the School Paraprofessional Advisory Council renamed the Connecticut Paraeducator of the Year Award in honor of Anne Marie Murphy, a beloved special education paraprofessional who lost her life during the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.
