Benjamin Lutz, a junior at PHS has been awarded the prestigious Rensselaer Medal for outstanding excellence in mathematics and science.

Lutz was officially recognized at the May 26, 2026, Region 15 Board of Education meeting by PHS Math/Science Chairperson, Mr. Christopher Walsh.

🏅 About the Rensselaer Medal

The Rensselaer Medal was established in 1916 by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to recognize the superlative academic achievements of promising students and to encourage them to pursue careers in science, engineering, and technology.

Each year, PHS faculty identify a junior who:

  • Excels in advanced math and science coursework.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to academic growth.
  • Expresses a dedicated interest in pursuing a future career in STEM fields.

A Premier Merit Scholarship: The medal serves as a premier merit scholarship valued at $40,000 per year, guaranteed for four years (or five years for the Bachelor of Architecture program) for each Medalist who is accepted and enrolls at RPI.

In addition to his academic success, Ben is a highly valued member of PHS Robotics Team 2064.

"Ben’s ability to maintain a positive outlook has been a cornerstone of our Robotics team. In the face of technical or competitive hurdles, his encouraging presence helped the team pivot from frustration to solutions," shared Mr. Marganski, the team’s teacher advisor. "We can always count on Ben to be there to see the best in a situation and find understanding of how to move past an issue. These traits, paired with a strong commitment to his studies, align perfectly with the demands of the STEM field. It is a pleasure to have Ben’s leadership and 'words of wisdom' back for his senior year."

PHS Math teacher Tamara Belisle praised Ben's work ethic and character as an exemplary student.

"Ben is a thoughtful and motivated student who consistently demonstrates perseverance and a strong work ethic in the classroom," noted Ms. Belisle. "He actively participates in class, collaborates well with peers, and approaches challenging material with curiosity and determination. Ben always has a positive attitude, respectful character, and is eager to learn each and every day. I know Ben is going to do great things in his future! Congratulations, Ben!”
