The Pomperaug High School Math Team completed its regular season in the Greater New Haven Math League (GNHML) finishing in 6th place out of 15 schools this year. By finishing in 6th place the PHS Math Team has qualified to advance to the CT State Math Match to be held on April 1st.
PHS Math Team: Sohan Nelakudity, Brandon Villadolid, Ishaan Nalla, Katherine Salsbury, Victoria Datlow, Victoria Bal, Austin Rasinski
The regular season consisted of 5 monthly competitions against fourteen other schools across New Haven County. New PHS Math Coach and parent volunteer, Joe Salsbury said, "Our Math Team has represented Pomperaug well in our first year. This group of extremely motivated students met all year every Tuesday evening to practice - even on days when school was not in session. I am proud of them and am excited to see what we can do in the state competition."
The PHS Math Team was led by junior Sohan Nelakudity along with freshmen Victoria Bal, Victoria Datlow, Ishaan Nalla, Austin Rasinski, Katherine Salsbury, and Brandon Villadolid. Brandon Villadolid was the top-scoring 9th grader in the entire league this year, while Sohan Nelakudity ranked 5th overall among all juniors in the league. The future is bright for the PHS Math Team. While most schools start mainly seniors and juniors, PHS had the youngest team in the league this season, routinely starting one junior and four freshmen. Coach Salsbury continued, "to have so many 9th graders on this team, who have not yet been exposed to a number of the topics they had to compete in and still do well enough to make it to the state competition is remarkable."
If the PHS Math Team comes in first place among size M schools at the CT State Match on April 1 they will qualify to move on to the New England Competition in May. Regardless of the outcome on April 1, this first season back of the Pomperaug High School Math Team has been a major success.
