Students at PHS are being recognized for their exceptional performance in this year’s American Mathematics Competition (AMC), a prestigious national assessment sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America.

39 students in grades 9–12 participated in the AMC 10 and AMC 12 in November, dedicating 75 minutes to solving 25 challenging, multi-step problems designed to test advanced mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.

For the AMC 10 at PHS, Katherine Salsbury earned first place, Gabriel Pessoa earned second place, and Sathya Pedapudi earned third place. For the AMC 12, Brandon Villadolid earned first place, Tommy Marciano earned second place, and Shaivi Gaddam earned third place.

Participation in the AMC is voluntary and reflects students’ intellectual curiosity and willingness to take on rigorous academic challenges beyond the classroom. These students demonstrated outstanding mathematical skill and perseverance, distinguishing themselves among their peers. All participants received certificates from their math teachers in recognition of their effort and achievement. PHS finalists also received special certificates indicating their placement within the high school and were formally recognized at a Board of Education meeting in February.

Christopher Walsh, Region 15’s Grades 6–12 Math/Science Department Chairperson, shared, “Congratulations to all students who participated in this year’s American Mathematics Competitions. It’s always wonderful to see new students each year who choose to sit for the exam. We are thankful for their willingness to engage in this academic challenge and represent Pomperaug High School among the many districts that participate.”
