Region 15 Superintendent Joshua Smith has proudly announced the recipients of the 2026 Western Connecticut Superintendent’s Awards (WCSA), presented annually by the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents (CAPSS).

These prestigious awards recognize students who exemplify academic achievement, leadership, service, and citizenship within their school and broader community.

Six outstanding students from Region 15 schools were selected for this year’s honor:

• Luke Albino and Daniela Ardino from Pomperaug High School
• James Schnell and Lucia Funderburk from Memorial Middle School
• Katelyn Jin and Jayden Patel from Rochambeau Middle School

Pomperaug High School (PHS)

Luke Albino approaches every endeavor with integrity, service, and dedication. As Class President and a member of the Athletic Leadership Council, he consistently demonstrates responsibility and a commitment to strengthening his school community. A varsity swimmer, Luke brings discipline and teamwork to all his pursuits. Beyond school, he has dedicated more than 90 hours volunteering on church mission trips, reflecting a deep sense of compassion and service that makes him a respected leader. Luke will attend Stevens Institute of Technology, where he plans to study Chemical Engineering and compete as a member of the Men’s Swimming program.

Daniela Ardino exemplifies leadership through her dedication, communication, and commitment to representing her peers. As a member of the Pomperaug Student Council and student representative to the Region 15 Board of Education, she serves as a strong voice for the student body while thoughtfully engaging with school leadership. Daniela’s enthusiasm and positivity inspire those around her, and her passion for advocacy reflects the very best qualities of a leader. Daneila will be attending the University of Connecticut to study Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences.

 

Memorial Middle School (MMS)

James Schnell has demonstrated a remarkable balance of academic achievement, athletic involvement, and community service. A two-time Patriot’s Pen finalist, James brings an intelligent and focused approach to his work while maintaining an engaging personality that keeps the classroom atmosphere light. His school participation includes a consistent three-year commitment to the chorus, as well as his presence on the school and community baseball, football, and golf teams. A dedicated Boy Scout of nine years and a library volunteer, James proves to be a positive, reliable presence in monthly community beautification projects.

Lucia Funderburk is a kindhearted student who works hard to balance academic strengths and leadership. Lucia shines in the classroom and across the broader school community through her involvement in cross country, chorus, and basketball. Her versatility is further emphasized by her participation in recreation and travel basketball and lacrosse teams. Lucia also volunteers her time through a religious youth group and the Otto Strong Youth Board wiffle ball tournament, showcasing a deep dedication to helping others.

Rochambeau Middle School (RMS)

Katelyn Jin is a dedicated high honors student who consistently demonstrates academic excellence and leadership, particularly in her high school-level Geometry class. Katelyn serves as the captain of the Math Club and is a kind, supportive, and helpful peer tutor. Her commitment to school spirit shines through her participation in the Cross-Country team. Beyond the school walls, Katelyn is a member of a premier competitive soccer club and serves her community by volunteering at the local food pantry as a proactive role model.

Jayden Patel is an outstanding high honors student in advanced algebra who excels on state and district assessments. Jayden recently represented RMS at the Math Counts state competition at Yale University. A talented musician, he is a dedicated member of both the school band and Jazz Band, where he leads by example. In addition to his academic prowess, Jayden is a member of a premier elite soccer club and is a competitive swimmer for a club team, embodying a tireless work ethic.

These six students truly demonstrate our mission in Region 15 through their hard work and commitment to others," said Superintendent Joshua Smith. "By leading by example, they inspire their peers and show the positive impact students can have on our community. We are proud to recognize their achievements and the leadership they bring to our schools every day."
