Evelyn was selected as one of a small group of student winners from across Connecticut, chosen from more than 1,000 entries submitted by elementary, middle, and high school students. The annual contest invites students to reflect on how they can carry forward Dr. King’s legacy in their own communities.

As part of this recognition, Evelyn attended a recent breakfast reception honoring student winners from across the state, where she was recognized alongside peers and local dignitaries and was recognized at the May 11th, Region 15 BOE meeting.

"Dr. King's legacy transcends the actions of one man. through his courage and commitment, Dr. King spurred a movement and inspired Americans to make a difference in their communities. On the 10th anniversary of this contest, I am so moved by these essays from students across Connecticut pushing Dr. King's work forward. This is a scary moment for our country, but these young authors remind us we all have the power to make a difference," said Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn).

“Thank you to Evelyn for stepping forward to participate in this meaningful opportunity and for demonstrating through her work that Dr. King’s dream lives in all of us. Her thoughtful perspective and commitment to leadership, service, and community are a reminder of the meaningful role students can play in carrying forward Dr. King’s message,” said Rochambeau Middle School Principal Michael J. Bernardi.
