Region 15 Schools

Region 15 is excited to share the inspiring work of Abigail Friedman, a junior at Pomperaug High School, who has successfully launched a new Spanish Enrichment Program for elementary students within our district.

The program, which debuted at Gainfield Elementary School (GES) this spring, is a testament to the power of student leadership in Region 15.

What began as a summer pilot through Southbury Parks & Recreation has grown into a thriving after-school initiative. Abby, supported by her advisor Ms. Raimundi and peers from the Spanish National Honor Society and the Latinx Club, designed this program to provide younger students with a cost-free, high-energy introduction to world languages.

Since its March launch, students have met weekly to explore basic Spanish words and phrases through interactive, age-appropriate activities designed to build confidence, curiosity, and a positive first experience with language learning.

Each session incorporates games, collaboration, and hands-on learning, allowing students to build familiarity with the language in a fun and supportive environment. At the same time, high school volunteers take on a meaningful role, sharing their knowledge, building leadership skills, and connecting with younger students in a simple but impactful peer-to-peer model.

The Enrichment Spanish Program reflects how student-led initiatives can create meaningful learning experiences across grade levels. By pairing older students with younger learners, the program highlights the value of mentorship, collaboration, and service within the Region 15 community, with the potential to expand similar opportunities in the future.
