Multilingual Learners
The Multilingual Learners Department is responsible for identifying and supporting Kindergarten - 12th grade students who speak a home language other than English and who are not yet proficient in English.
Identification Procedures
Connecticut and federal statutes governing the education of Multilingual Learners (MLs) require the assessment and identification of all students who enter the Region 15 Public Schools. The Language Assessment System (LAS Links) prompted by the Home Language Survey are used by Region 15 Public Schools to identify such students as Multilingual Learners.
The Region 15 Public Schools offer two basic programs for students who qualify as Multilingual Learners to assist students in acquiring the English language:
- English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL); or
- Regular education class without ESOL support.
Exit Procedures
For students to exit the ESOL Program/no longer receive English language acquisition support, they must reach the state-mandated exit requirements as listed on the State of Connecticut English Language Learners Exit Criteria.
